How secure are e-commerce transactions?

Credit card numbers are not entered while connected to the merchants webserver. The numbers are submitted by the customer while they are directly connected to the payment gateway.
Because the credit card numbers are never seen by the merchant, and are not even stored or recorded in any way, this removes the possibility of credit card numbers being lost or stolen by the merchant, greatly decreasing risk of liability for the merchant and increasing security for the customer.
What Is SSL (Secure Socket Layer)?
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. SSL is a method of encryption that is used to protect sensitive data as it is passed across the internet. Modern SSL encryption is so strong that it has been calculated that a 128 bit symmetric key would, on average, take more time to crack by brute force than the solar system has left before the sun goes nova and swallows the earth.
Do I need SSL on my webserver?
Credit card numbers are entered while on the banks SSL protected secure transaction server, thus SSL is not required. However, SSL is optional and may be used on the website during the shopping process to protect other order information.
How Do I Integrate My Website To The Payment Gateway For Credit Card Processing?

• An API method of integration for greater control over how your website is connected to the payment gateway.
• A java method of integration, using a customized java applet to connect your website to the payment gateway for real time transaction processing.
Any type of server, operating system and website can be easily integrated with the payment gateway for real time credit card processing. An experienced webmaster should be able to have integration completed in less than an hour. This can be done by html forms, Java, or an API. It is up to you to choose whichever method is best suited to your project.

Is a shopping cart necessary to accept payment online?
No a shopping cart is not necessary to accept payment online. HTML forms may be constructed to pass order data to the payment gateway. It is often desirable to use a shopping cart program because of the advantages of tax calculations, shipping calculations, and order tracking.
